Pets At Rest Hospice & Home Euthanasia

When the time comes to say goodbye to your beloved companion, you deserve more than just a clinical experience—you deserve compassionate support, experienced guidance, and the quiet comfort of familiar surroundings. As a locally owned and community-rooted practice, Pets at Rest is built on deep, personal connections—not corporate policies. Dr. Dawnetta is a trusted and nationally recognized expert in pet end-of-life care, proudly serving St. Louis families with both a Comfort Center and in-home euthanasia and hospice services.

Because we are independently owned – not part of a chain – our reputation is built one family, one pet, and one heartfelt goodbye at a time. We live in the St Louis Metro Area, too. That means greater accountability, personalized attention, and a team that treats every client like a neighbor…because you are.

Don’t wait for a crisis, when everything feels more difficult. Contact us today to discuss your pet’s end-of-life options—before the final moment arrives. Early guidance can bring clarity and peace of mind when you need it most.

Choose the Setting That Feels Right for You and Your Pet

At our warm and welcoming Comfort Center, your pet will be treated like family. The environment is a quiet, private house, specifically designed to help pets and their people feel calm, safe, and connected during this deeply emotional time. It is not a clinical setting in any way – there are blankets, pillows, couches, and cozy chairs – and pets are always allowed on the furniture. This environment is ideal for families who seek the comfort of home, without the memory of their pet passing there. We hope our Comfort Center feels like an extension of your own home—a reflection of the community values we hold dear.

For families who prefer to remain in the comfort of their own home, we offer In-Home Euthanasia Services – a peaceful and personalized option that allows your furry friend to spend their final moments in their most familiar place. In-home services are ideal for pets who are anxious in the car, who are physically fragile, or for families who simply want familiarity during the goodbye process.

No matter which location you choose, the process is the same. After talking with you about your pet, we will offer guidance and confirmation that euthanasia is the kindest decision possible. Your pet’s passing will be handled with compassionate care, dignity, and respect. They will receive gentle sedation & pain medication to help them relax. Once they are sleeping, we will make a clay paw impression before allowing your pet to pass peacefully, surrounded with love.

Our Story

We have been helping pets in the St. Louis area since 2012.

The Pets At Rest Vet Team is here to guide you through your pet’s end-of-life journey. We provide comfort, respect, direction, trust, and gentle care because we understand how difficult it is to lose a beloved member of your family. As a small, locally owned practice, we take the time to know your story and walk beside you personally. You’ll never be rushed. You’ll never be “just another appointment.” You and your pet matter deeply to us—and that difference is felt in every interaction.

As the pioneer of in-home palliative and hospice care for pets in St. Louis, Dr. Dawnetta has been a tireless advocate for providing pets with gentle, peaceful passings surrounded by those who love them most. With over two decades of veterinary experience, she has not only cared for thousands of pets at the end of their journeys but has also educated veterinarians nationwide, helping to shape the field of animal hospice care across the country. Her knowledge and compassionate methods are sought after internationally, and her work continues to help define the gold standard of comfort care for animals.

Pet Quality of Life Evaluations

We will help you assess your pet’s quality of life over the phone (Telehealth visits) or with a hospice visit. Our veterinarian will talk with you about your pet’s health history, medications, activities, food intake, and sleep patterns. They will make recommendations regarding your pet’s current quality of life, ongoing monitoring, and (in person visits only) can also change or modify your pet’s medications.

Pet In-Home Euthanasia

Pet Euthanasia in our Comfort Center

For our animal family members, we have the difficult honor of being able to choose the details of their final day. We have the privilege of giving our pets what many of us would want for ourselves…a goodbye where they can be relaxed, comfortable, protected, and loved. This is our heart’s work – helping families create a beautiful goodbye.

Pet Cremation Arrangements

Pet Cremation Arrangements

If you would like us to help with your pet’s aftercare, we will wrap them in a blanket and respectfully keep them with us. Our crematory partner will arrange either private or communal cremation (depending on your wishes). With private cremation, your pet’s ashes will be returned to you in a wooden cherry box. With communal cremation, your pet’s ashes will not be returned to you – they will be scattered near a pond in the country, on the crematory grounds.

Pets At Rest Hospice & Home Euthanasia FAQ’s

Do you have questions about your pet’s end-of-life care? Being in our Comfort Center allows your companion to be comfortable while giving you the time, space, and privacy to say goodbye in your own way. Please see the full list of FAQs below, and feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns.

When Is The Right Time?
Your pet is a part of your family, so you care about him or her very much. That means you want to make the ‘right’ decision – but there is no time that feels ‘good’ to say goodbye. When a pet is struggling, no choice feels ‘right’ – so we have to make the best decision possible, in the midst of a difficult situation. Our veterinary nurses and hospice veterinarians are here to help you through that decision. There is usually not just one day where the decision is appropriate, and it is better to be a few days too early than a moment too late. At some point, you’ll see your pet struggling, and you’ll know that watching them get worse is more difficult than letting them go. That is when you know you’re as ready as you ever will be.
What will happen during our visit?
When you arrive, we will spend a few moments meeting you and your pet. If you have any questions, we will be they will be glad to answer them for you. Your pet will then receive a cocktail of sedation and pain medication so that he / she can begin to feel relaxed and comfortable. (Most pets handle the sedation injection about the same as they typically handled their vaccines.) Once your pet is asleep, the doctor can make a clay paw impression (if you would like one). The final injection of medication is an overdose of anesthesia that will allow your pet to peacefully pass in their sleep. Once our veterinarian has confirmed your pet’s passing, they will offer to give you a few moments alone. If we are assisting you with aftercare arrangements, your pet will be wrapped in a soft, cozy blanket. If you are taking your pet home with you, we will help you carry them to your car (if desired).
